Habits ... we all have got them!

Let's all post about the healthy habit we are going to start and the bad habit we are going to break!

Some examples of bad habits include the following:
  • Swearing
  • Texting While Driving
  • Complacency
  • Lying
  • Negative Self-Talk
  • Coffee
  • Watching TV
  • Internet Porn
  • Gossip
  • Ordering In
  • Buying Bottled Water

Are you searching for the perfect good habit to start, but don't have any good ideas yet? Below you will find a list of some ideas the author of the book and her friends came up with:

  • Take up Cooking (at least one meal a day)
  • Organize Your House, Clear Clutter
  • Study a Foreign Language
  • Learn/Practice a Musical Instrument
  • Rediscover Reading for Pleasure
  • Take up Journaling
  • Take up Yoga
  • Take up Meditation
  • Floss Daily
  • Call Three People You Like Each Day
  • Be of Service to Others (Do Charitable Work)

I strongly suggest (if you haven't read the book) reading this section on the habits rule. I am going to include my choices as a reply to this post and encourage you to do the same. (If you think the photo is a giveaway to my choices you are wrong, you have to read to find out!)

  1. If I am honest I could probably use change in most of the areas listed as samples. I don't want to over do it and set myself up for failure some I am picking one small habit to start out.

For a good habit I am going to work on my clutter ... I am a pretty clean person, but I have stacks around the house which make everything look messy and sometimes make life harder than it needs to be (when I am trying to find something!)

So my goal: (this might sound wimpy, but this is my goal) I am going to have 3 5-minute intervals throughout the day where I am either organizing something in my house or getting the mail and putting that away right away ... instead of letting junk mail sit on the counter for a month!

My bad habit I want to break (or at least reduce) is screens ... at night I find myself mindlessly watching TV even when nothing good is on or browsing the internet looking for nothing. Half the time I am just zoning anyway. It's not always mindless ... sometimes I am working, but what I should really be is focused on my family not half work half family. I alerted Chris tonight that no matter what is on I am taking 3 nights off a week (starting at 5:30 PM) to read, organize, hang out with him, or just go to bed earlier ... not sure he was totally thrilled about anything aside from organize but he is on board!

The only exception will be to fulfill my role as score keeper at 8 PM every night!

    1. I just got this email and thought of your good habit goal. Here are some clutter tips that might help. http://www.homemadesimple.com/en-us/cleaning/pages/total-home-clean-out.aspx

  3. I too have been contemplating which habits I want to jump on board with and which habits I need to let go of.

I am going to try really hard (especially during the next 4 weeks) to stop buying a mocha everyday on my way to work. Not only will this be a healthier choice, my wallet will thank me.

One habit I would like to jump on board with is reading for enjoyment more. I got my kindle fire and use it frequently. Just need to put the computer down more and read more :)

  4. Those are great, Amber! I think a mocha would cost you snacking points anyway ... unless one could be your 100 calories of anything?

    1. reading was almost my choice, too .. I LOVE to read, but don't as often as I would like ... I am hoping with fewer screens I read more anyway!

  5. I'm giving up Starbucks ( not coffee though I have a newborn lol, maybe one cup black coffee ) and read 10 min every day! Trying to keep it simple so I can achieve these!
Are we supposed to report our weights and the goal?

  6. I think those are great, Banu! Got to start somewhere!!

I think we can keep the weight private, but it is honor system. Enter it on the score sheet you printed and report your % lost every Wednesday!

  7. My good habit I'm going to incorporate is reading for 20 minutes a day. I have a stack of books by my bed that I keep staring at and it never seems to get any smaller. (Looks like I could use the de-cluttering habit, too).

For my bad habit, I'm going to stop complaining. It's starting to annoy even me.

  8. Good habit: Relaxation - I am going to take at least 10 minutes out of each day to relax: it could be just laying on my massage table and breathing or taking a relaxing bath, or reading a book for 10-15 minutes.

Bad habit: Impatient – I need to take time out and be more patient. This is in general, waiting at a stoplight, watching the pinwheel on my computer spin - I get so impatient, I want things done quickly and NOW! So I need to take a deep breath and wait, be PATIENT.

  9. Good habit: Being more present in Kayla's life. It sounds obvious & ambiguous at the same time, but I find that I am always so preoccupied with homework, my cell phone, tv, my mind - that I'm often only half paying attention. I need to give her a minimum of 15 minutes of my undivided attention.

Bad habit: Texting while driving. I know it's bad, but I have voice text, I just have to click around to get it all set up, which is just as dangerous. Plus Kayla doesn't need to pick this habit up from me. Does texting at a stoplight count???

  10. I am determined to get to bed by 10:30 maybe even earlier. Getting 7 hours of sleep is not something I'm use to much less regularly. As for my good habit I plan to take a yoga class twice a week.
